Surfing in Montezuma

The following information is based on research done by Jeremy from the Montezuma Surf School.   He spoke with a marine biologist in Puntarenas who specializes in red tide research:
.
1. There are many kinds of red tide, most of which are harmless.  Some do have harmful effects which usually affect sea life more than humans.
2. There is no evidence yet that this red tide is at all harmful to humans.
3. Swimming, if harmful at all, is not as dangerous as eating infected sea life.  The most harmful effects on humans are due to eating infected
shellfish and possibly (but less likely) fish in certain kinds of red tide.  Consumption may cause sickness, paralysis or even death!  So avoid eating shellfish or fish during this time
4.  If this is a harmful red tide, a small percentage of people may be mildly affected by simply being near or swimming or surfing in the ocean.
5.  The only known side effects are mild and include:
  • Eye irritation
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Skin irritation
6. If affected, it helps to take a shower and to get into an air-conditioned room.
7. Usually those prone to plant allergies to begin with may be affected. If you notice any symptoms, simply getting away from the beach or entering an air conditioned room should cause the symptoms to disappear.
8. Asthmatics however may experience significant respiratory problems such as decreased lung capacity.   If you are asthmatic, we recommend NOT swimming or surfing during red tide.
9. Although some locals spread this rumor, there is no evidence that red tide can cause an ear infection (although just swimming in the ocean can often cause an ear infection under any circumstance).  Our friend, nurse and Montezuma resident, Amanda Weir, recommends putting hydrogen peroxide in your ears after getting out of the ocean to avoid ear infections whether or not in the presence of a red tide.
10. As we are confident that the effects of surfing in a red tide (if seen at all) are indeed mild, our Surfing courses are continuing as planned, and were done in the last red tide as well, without ill-effect to our students.

Three humpback whales killed by illegal nets off Cabuya

Monday, August 30th, 2010

greetings from paradise !!!

please click on ’show quoted text’ to see the article.
larry, the ngo npo whale conservation org in jaco’s playa hermosa is KETO.
their website is under construction, i couldn’t get any contact info from their current website.
naty or yiokko, do you know any contact info for this org ?

poor doomed whales,
mary at rainsong

AUGUST 24,2010 TUESDAY

A BABY HUMPBACK WHALE AND HIS 2 COMPANIONS, assumably HIS MOTHER AND HIS ‘AUNTIE’, WERE ENTANGLED IN THE LABYRINTHE OF ILLEGAL GILLNETS IN THE ‘PROTECTED’ WATERS OFF THE RESERVA CABO BLANCO in CABUYA.

THE BABY DROWNED QUICKLY,

THE 2 ADULT FEMALES SWAM FOR THEIR LIVES TO ESCAPE THE 500 METER LONG KILLER NETS.

THEY WERE SEEN LEAPING FROM THE WATER REPEATEDLY, DESPERATELY TRYING TO UNTANGLE THEMSELVES AS THEY HEADED OUT TO OPEN OCEAN.

MINAET[GOVT AGENCY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE IN COSTA RICA] OFFICIALS JUST STOOD ON THE SHORE TAKING VIDEOS AND PICS.

CONSERVATIONISTS CAME FROM AS FAR AWAY AS JACO’S PLAYA HERMOSA [FROM KETO, A WHALE CONSERVATION NGO NPO, www.fundacionketo.org] TO TRY TO CHASE DOWN THE WHALES TO CUT AWAY THE NETS AND SAVE THE ADULT WHALES, BUT THE WHALES OUTRAN THEIR BOATS.

THE WHALES FINALLY SANK TO THE BOTTOM, DRUG DOWN BY THE WEIGHT OF THE NETS.

RAINSONG HAS INITIATED A JUDICIAL INVESTIGATION TO PROSECUTE THE GILLNETTERS GUILTY OF THIS TRAGEDY.

WE WANT JUSTICE FOR THESE 3 DROWNED WHALES !

JUDICIAL AUTHORITIES HAVE ALREADY AGREED TO HELP RAINSONG SEEK JUSTICE FOR THESE WHALES,

SINCE LOCAL MINAET OFFICIALS ARE IGNORING THE INCIDENT AND HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY ACTION YET AGAINST THE ILLEGAL GILLNETTERS RESPONSIBLE.

THE BABY WHALE’S BODY WASHED UP NEAR PLAYA CARILLO, NEXT TO SAMARA.

THE 2 ADULTS’ BODIES HAVE YET TO SURFACE.

THERE IS A REPORT IN LA NACION NEWSPAPER, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, ON PAGE 15A.

THIS NEWSPAPER IS ONLINE, YOU CAN GO TO THIS LINK TO SEE THE ARTICLE…

La Nacion Article about Whales

contrary to what the LA NACION states, MINAET officials did not assist in the attempt to rescue the whales.

they just stood on the shore taking videos & pics. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES in CABUYA.

if any of you find any reports online regarding this incident, please send them to rainsong, c/o email : rainsongwildlifesanctuary@gmail.com

RELATED INCIDENT ???… THIS SAME DAY AT 1:52 PM WE EXPERIENCED AN EARTHQUAKE IN CABUYA, just as the whales were sinking to their death.

MOTHER EARTH IS ANGRY ! [ my perspective !]

mary at rainsong

DEATH THREATS – early in 2010 the illegal gillnetters in cabuya began to repeatedly send death threats to me, saying if i try to bring the authorities to the cabuya waters to stop the illegal gillnetting there [as i did in manzanillo], the gillnetters will send their columbian ‘friends’ to kill me.

HA! i look to a higher power for my inspiration and intuition, and yes, protection to continue my efforts to save what’s left of wildlife/sealife in costa rica.

MINAET officials of the RESERVA CABO BLANCO have never made any attempt to protect the sealife inside the ‘protected’ waters of the reserva.

MINAET officials continually ignore the illegal gillnets killing EVERYTHING ALIVE inside the reserva’s ‘protected’ waters.

just as they continually ignore the CONSTANT poaching for the bushmeat trade INSIDE THE PROTECTED FORESTS OF THE RESERVA.

Dengue Fever Cure with Papaya Leaves

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

From:

Dr.B.N.Viswanath
consultant in organic farming
& Organic Terrace Gardens
Bangalore, India

I would like to share this interesting discovery from a classmate’s son who has just recovered from dengue fever. Apparently, his son was in the critical stage at the ICU when his blood platelet count drops to 15 after 15 liters of blood transfusion.

His father was so worried that he seeks another friend’s recommendation and his son was saved. He confessed to me that he gave his son raw juice of the papaya leaves. From a platelet count of 45 after 20 liters of blood transfusion, and after drinking the raw papaya leaf juice, his platelet count jumps instantly to 135. Even the doctors and nurses were surprised. After the second day he was discharged. So he asked me to pass this good news around.

Accordingly it is raw papaya leaves, 2pcs just cleaned and pound and squeeze with filter cloth. You will only get one tablespoon per leaf. So two tablespoon per serving once a day. Do not boil or cook or rinse with hot water, it will loose its strength. Only the leafy part and no stem or sap. It is very bitter and you have to swallow it like “Won Low Kat”. But it works.

*Papaya Juice – Cure for Dengue*

You may have heard this elsewhere but if not I am glad to inform you that papaya juice is a natural cure for dengue fever. As dengue fever is rampant now, I think it’s good to share this with all.

A friend of mine had dengue last year. It was a very serious situation for her as her platelet count had dropped to 28,000 after 3 days in hospital and water has started to fill up her lung. She had difficulty in breathing. She was only 32-year old. Doctor says there’s no cure for dengue. We just have to wait for her body immune system to build up resistance against dengue and fight its own battle. She already had 2 blood transfusion and all of us were praying very hard as her platelet continued to drop since the first day she was admitted.

Fortunately her mother-in-law heard that papaya juice would help to reduce the fever and got some papaya leaves, pounded them and squeeze the juice out for her. The next day, her platelet count started to increase, her fever subside. We continued to feed her with papaya juice and she recovered after 3 days!!!

Amazing but it’s true. It’s believed one’s body would be overheated when one is down with dengue and that also caused the patient to have fever papaya juice has cooling effect. Thus, it helps to reduce the level of heat in one’s body, thus the fever will go away. I found that it’s also good when one is having sore throat or suffering from heat.

Please spread the news about this as lately there are many dengue cases. It’s great if such natural cure could help to ease the sufferings of dengue patients.

Furthermore it’s so easily available. Blend them and squeeze the juice! It’s simple and miraculously effective!!

Renting a Villa for Surfing in Mal Pais, Costa Rica

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Casa de Amor - 2BR/1BA Malpais Villa

Do you know the way to San Jose? Would you then like to go on a Surfin Safari? Right, now that we`ve got the obligatory `60s pop song references out of the way, all you have to do is have a look see at a map, find Costa Rica, then find San Jose and then Mal Pais. It used to be a quaint little fishing village, but has since been found out as surfer`s paradise and as such, a holiday hotspot for surfers and those who like to lounge about the beach and look at the surfers.

You get to Mal Pais from Puntarenas, then a ferry to Paquera and then on to Mal Pais beach. The best place to surf there is Mar Azul and the best time of year for catching the waves is between December and April, though there’s usually good wave action in the morning all year around. But there are also very popular surfing sports on the near by beaches of Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen.

Other attractions include boating, fishing, snorkelling, forest hiking and canopy touring (where you roll yourself along the treetops on cables) and horseback riding.

There`s a nature reserve called Cabo Blanco (white cape) just south of Mal Pais. This includes a rock island which is white because it`s covered entirely in seabird dung. We`re not saying it`s a must see, but Cabo Blanco is the oldest reserve of that type in Costa Rica.

The actual village of Mal Pais is not really geared for tourists and that`s probably the point. You do your shopping and so on in nearby villages. Mal Pais is where you stay to get away from it all. And surf.

One of the best ways to enjoy Mal Pais and come and go as you please is to rent a villa. You can find plenty of villas online, usually named Casa this or that or Hacienda this or that and the descriptions are always heavenly, as are the pictures. Casa Blanca, for example, which sleeps ten (three bedrooms, hmm, that must mean a bit of cosiness is involved), breathtaking views, a 20 meter infinity lap pool and a roof terrace. All yours for between $2,450 USD to $7000 USD per week. Even places described as “rustic” run from about $200 USD per night. The purposefully named Casa De Amor is geared towards honeymooners, with complete privacy, ocean views, the lot.

One beachfront rental, Punta Coco, looks like a classic Costa Rican holiday beach home, with multiple cabins with AC (5 bedrooms), and an outdoor kitchen/dining area, perfect for watching the Howler moneys. Prices range from $400 USD to $700 USD per night, but split that among, say 6-12 surfers and it`s not so bad a deal at all.

While there are probably good Costa Rican travel deals and package tours, it`s more adventurous and less scheduled if you just rent a villa and do your own thing. A good place to start searching for villas is on the internet, then when you find one you like the look of, check out the terms and conditions, the prices, the ease of getting there and of course the availability. If all goes well, a deposit is usually required and the balance must arrive a few weeks before you do. After that, it`s surf`s up.

Donations urgently needed for the new police station construction

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Ok ok……everyone ready for a laugh? the two sinks, which were donated, for the police station bathrooms have been stolen. why? because we ran out of money before we could completely secure the place. so…..now that everyone is smiling…..and YES we are having the fundraiser on the 22 of may…..but honestly, we need help NOW in order to secure this building so we don’t lose anything else. we have been focusing on trying to at least finish one room and one bathroom, so that we do not have to rent a house anymore, however, without making the whole house secure, there is always a risk of theft. (as we all know!!)

so, to secure the place we need (1) verhas on all the windows, (2) a front door plus good door handle, and (3) to close up the back wall with block.

i have one ferreteria who has agreed to extend us credit to buy the block (a total of 215.000 with varilla and cemento), but we do not have such luxury for the steel need to do the verhas. the verhas constructed and installed run around 300.000 colones, unless someone knows or is themselves a welder and can help us.

please, we have come soooo soooo far……but we need a bit more immediate help to protect the work that we’ve done thus far. ANYTHING will be helpful…..10.000, 100.000 or (yes i am dreaming here…) 1.000.000 colones. ANYTHING. please.

the Banco Nacional account is in the name of the Asociacion Probienestar de Mal Pais, Sta. Teresa y Manzanillo, and the account number is 200-01-191-000327-1.

for those of you unaware, the police station is located on the road on the south end of the football field in Santa Teresa.

thank you in advance for any and all help!!!

Casa Zen

Summary of Various Malpais and Santa Teresa News

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

A water commission was formed and is composed of members of the Càmara de Turismo, the Muni, business and environmental representatives, with the intention of finishing the acueduct project that has been on the table for 10 years.   led by a private consulting company with experience in working with both local ASADAs (water boards) and AyA throughout Costa Rica, the committee will be looking at proper engineering and design of the entire project, funding options both nationally and internationally, and environmental impacts.   a significant amount of money has already been saved by re-examining the initial proposal, identifying more accessible areas for installing the pipe, and securing agreements with various landowners.   this and other proposals will be examined in detail and in conjunction with AyA to bring water to everyone, al fin y al cabo!

The Muni of Cobano, in conjunction with the Ministerio de Salud, will collect large trash items which may be at risk for forming breeding grounds for the mosquitos which carry dengue.  the collection will occur FRIDAY, MAY 14, and again on FRIDAY, MAY 21, starting at 8am.   please collect all items and have them by the side of the road by 8am Friday!

The construction of the police station is nearly finished, and a Fun Run will be held on May 22, from Pizzeria Playa Carmen to Flor Blanca, approximately 5K.   all proceeds will help finish the police station, and any overage will go directly to building a permanent station for the Red Cross to house an ambulance 24/7 — a service desperately needed for those who cannot afford private ambulance service!  more details on the event will be available soon. anyone wanting to donate to the police station and/or the ambulance service may donate directly to the Asociaciòn Probienestar, Banco Nacional account #200-01-191-000327-1

many are concerned about the electocution of monkeys on the power lines in our area.  following the lead of areas like Nosara, the Asociaciòn Probienestar will be holding a meeting on WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, at 3pm in Casa Zen to discuss the insulation of power lines, and construction and installation of monkey bridges.   representatives from ICE will be invited to the meeting.

the Asociaciòn Probienestar has begun collaborating with the University of Costa Rica, in helping students complete their TCUs (Trabajo Comunal Universitaria, or University Community Service), of which students must complete 300 hours.   the work of the students can include repairs to the local elementary schools, environmental education, beach clean-ups, mural paintings, etc, etc.   please help us welcome these students in town with your ideas and collaboration!

Water Shortage Situation and History in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Monday, April 26th, 2010

(Spanish translation below)

Hello everyone — Here we present a summary of the meeting yesterday at the pizzeria playa carmen, held with a consultant who is helping the village with the water project.  if wrong in any detail, please tell me, and I will post a correction.

A starting point: the history of the project:

Almost 10 years ago, AyA and the ASADAs (water boards) of our communities, began to study the needs of the people, and the possibility to construct a system of taking, storing and transporting water from manzanillo to Mal País. after 10 years of broken promises, meetings to discuss and complain, and a change of employees in AyA all the time …. we arrive at the point where we are today: time to ACT.

So, the municipalities, the tourism board, and other groups from the community, have contracted with a private consultant to help us solve this puzzle.

Now, AyA has 800 million colones and the municipality has 100 million to contribute to the project. this amount covers Stage 1 only, which is the extension of impulsion lines 2.8km from the wells in the Ario to a storage tank near Cerro Real, which will contain approximately 1 million meters of water storage. Stage 1 continues with water lines going to Bello Horizonte.  additionally, there have already been site visits from a group including the ASADAs, the muni, and the consultants to assess the Stage 1 plan that was presented three years ago from AyA.   they have found that some routes are no longer viable due to neglect.  as well as some proposed routes pass to one hill after another, thereby diminishing the water pressure unnecessarily. therefore, they are now evaluating other routes to save money and time.

Stage 2 includes the extension of lines Manzanillo to the end of Mal País.   the consultants are now re-evaluating the plan, and note that some drive pumps, small storage tanks, etc, are not in the original plans, so they are starting a full feasibility study.  rather, this is part of the work of a new Implementation Committee, formed with membership of the municipality, entrepreneurs, the ASADAs, the Chamber of Tourism, the Road Committee and Environmental groups.  A list of members is provided at the end of this summary.

At the end of the day, the project will cost considerably more than what is available.   however one option is to maintain the properties of the wells in the name of ASADA, thus giving collateral to take a loan and complete the project.  how will we pay for the loan?   the profits of the three ASADAs through payments for meters and water payments.

One more note on finance:  after a meeting with members of the Implementation Commission and AyA, we now know that funding sources usually available from countries like Germany, Japan, etc, are not available for this project.  additionally, funding sources from the Costa Rican government for marginal areas, do not apply here because we are not defined as an area incapable of more development.   so, this new Commission, together with the ASADAs and THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE, will seek a solution that serves everyone.

Any questions, please tell me, and I will to my best to find the answer.

Grupo Representado ——  Titulados  ——-   Suplentes
ASADA Mal País —–  Elias Nuñez  ——  Marlon Barrios
ASADA Sta. Teresa  —-  Gerardo Cubrero  —– Margot Toro
ASADA del Ario ——  José Luis Cavallini  —— Nautilio Jiménez
Cámara de Turísmo —-  Frank Cortes  ——  Yerlin León
Comité de Caminos —–  Carlos Carranza  —–  Elvis Castro
Comité Ambiental  —–   Nathaniel Grew  ——  Luis Iglesias
Empresarial 1  —–   José Alberto León  ——  Jerome Augereau
Empresarial 2  —–   Virginia Vargas  ——  Philippe Verqui
Empresarial 3  —–  Kelly Lange  ——-  Axel Hunot
Municipalidad  —–   Eladio Cortes  ——  Fabio López

Sea Turtles Update for Manzanillo and Malpais Areas

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Illegal gillnetters, shrimp boats, nest robbers, and vehicles threaten endangered sea turtles on Playa Manzanillo, Nicoya Peninsula

February 1, 2010 – Cabuya, Costa Rica

Illegal fishing kills sea turtles

Illegal gillnetters, shrimp boats, nest robbers, and vehicles threaten endangered sea turtles on Playa Manzanillo, Nicoya Peninsula

Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary’s sea turtle protection project at Playa Manzanillo de Cobano on the Nicoya Peninsula has revealed the
operation of up to 100 boats using illegal gillnets in the waters near Manzanillo. Most of these boats are gillnetting inside the 12 kilometers of strictly protected ocean that is part of the Caletas/Ario Wildlife Refuge.

The gillnets entangle sea turtles attempting to reach the beach to lay their eggs, causing their death by drowning. Eye witnesses report that
gillnetters dismember the turtles for their flesh and shells, dump the remains overboard, and sell the meat and shells in Puntarenas.  Hawksbill, leatherback, olive ridley, black, and green turtles nest on Playa Manzanillo. All except the ridley are critically endangered globally. The hawksbill is the most endangered sea turtle on the planet.

All species of sea turtles are protected by international and national laws. In Costa Rica the penalty for nest robbing or killing a sea turtle is three years in prison. These protective, but poorly enforced, laws reflect the tremendous obstacles to sea turtle survival: only one hatchling in one thousand that actually reach the sea survive their first year. The tragic situation at Playa Manzanillo prompted Rainsong to request immediate action from pertinent Costa Rican authorities on December 20, 2009.

Boats in Manzanillo used for illegal fishing

On Friday, January 8, 2010, three officials from the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (MINAET) and five public police officials accompanied Mary Lynn Perry, President of Rainsong, and Walter Cuendis Lopez, Rainsong’s Sea Turtle Patrol Captain, to inspect and photograph the boats using the illegal nets in order for Rainsong to file a Denuncia.

After much insistence, PRETOMA’s Erick Lopez Aguero convinced the Costa Rican Coast Guard to make a sweep at sea to confiscate illegal nets and document gillnetters’ boats for legal prosecutions. This operation began on Monday, January 18. The Coast Guard never reached the rocky reef of the Caletas/Ario refuge, however, because the patrol boat had filled the vessel with confiscated gillnets before even reaching Playa Coyote, north of Manzanillo. Rainsong is still waiting for the promised return of the Costa Rican Coast Guard to remove the
gilllnets inside the national wildlife refuge.
On January 25, PRETOMA officers and Rainsong’s Walter and ‘Pipo’ (Edier Rodriguez) inspected refuge waters in PRETOMA’s two launches. Many signs of gillnetting paraphernalia were found, but the group was unable to pull the devices because police officers requested did not show up to provide authorization for their removal.
..
.
Where is MINAET?

Illegal driving on the beach in Manzanillo, Costa Rica

MINAET, which has legal jurisdiction for wildlife in the protected area, has been asked repeatedly by Rainsong to bring its authority to the situation. MINAET’s Area de Conservacion Tempisque (ACT) offices in Nicoya and Hojanche have not responded with any action to date. According to Nathaniel Grew Jr., Refuge Representative, MINAET abandoned this site more than three years ago, breaking a contract with the Refuge to provide presence of authority and patrols.
..
.
Threats from all sides: Illegal shrimpboats inside the refuge; cars, nest robbers, driftwood and trash

Turtles able to reach the beach to nest face additional threats. It is illegal to drive on Costa Rica’s beaches, but cars regularly plough deep ruts into the sand at Playa Manzanillo. Both turtle nests and hatchlings are crushed by the vehicles, and hatchlings trapped in the ruts cannot reach the sea before heat from the morning sun kills them. Driftwood and trash on the beach also make it difficult for the hatchlings to reach the ocean. Nest robbers take an additional heavy toll.

Sea turtle protection project successes

Baby sea turtle in Manzanillo / Malpais / Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Rainsong’s Patrol Captain, Walter Cuendis, patrols 14 kilometers of nesting beaches nightly, on foot.  A tireless, fearless protector of the sea turtles, he is known as ‘’tortuga ninja’’ by locals and Rainsong volunteers. Walter and Mary have endured death threats and aggression from angry gillnetters who want to end all endeavors to bring the authorities to Manzanillo to stop the massacre of marine life.

Rainsong’s protection project, which began patrols on December 20, has encountered 35 nests to date. Eight were leatherback, the others were olive ridley and black sea turtles. Eleven nests, two of which were leatherback, were rescued and transferred to a safe location. The rest of the nests were raided by human nest robbers before they could be saved. Approximately 275 hatchlings have been rescued and escorted to the sea, from nests that escaped nest robbers before Rainsong began patrols.

Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary is seeking sponsors, volunteers, and donations to continue the fight to protect the unique sea turtle nesting site at Playa Manzanillo. For more information, please visit www.costaricaanimals.org, www.rainsongsanctuary.com, or send an email to:
