This is one of the finest ocean view houses in Malpais, and at a bargain price. Most of the area’s surf breaks can be seen from the spectacular infinity pool area, complete with its own private waterfall. It’s literally on a mountaintop, since the owner used to own the entire mountain that it’s on, and selling lots to many of the people whose houses you now see on this site. But he kept the best spot for himself, and built his house on it, which is now available for rent.

The house has two large bedrooms, with beds sleeping adults (Two king size beds and one folding sofa that is a double.) It has a full sized kitchen as well… everything is excellent quality.

The house has high speed WIFI and a TV with cable.

Editor’s Note: This is my personal house that I’m renting for myself for the rainy season in 2011, but I can sub-lease it to you for a week or two. It’s absolutely spectacular. The decor isn’t the most modern, and the house itself isn’t huge, but the layout, views, and connection with the amazing pool area create an atmosphere like you’re in the Garden of Eden, but on a mountaintop. You will be amazed and very happy with this choice.

Casa de Amor - 2BR/1BA Malpais Villa

Do you know the way to San Jose? Would you then like to go on a Surfin Safari? Right, now that we`ve got the obligatory `60s pop song references out of the way, all you have to do is have a look see at a map, find Costa Rica, then find San Jose and then Mal Pais. It used to be a quaint little fishing village, but has since been found out as surfer`s paradise and as such, a holiday hotspot for surfers and those who like to lounge about the beach and look at the surfers.



You get to Mal Pais from Puntarenas, then a ferry to Paquera and then on to Mal Pais beach. The best place to surf there is Mar Azul and the best time of year for catching the waves is between December and April, though there’s usually good wave action in the morning all year around. But there are also very popular surfing sports on the near by beaches of Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen.



Other attractions include boating, fishing, snorkelling, forest hiking and canopy touring (where you roll yourself along the treetops on cables) and horseback riding.



There`s a nature reserve called Cabo Blanco (white cape) just south of Mal Pais. This includes a rock island which is white because it`s covered entirely in seabird dung. We`re not saying it`s a must see, but Cabo Blanco is the oldest reserve of that type in Costa Rica.



The actual village of Mal Pais is not really geared for tourists and that`s probably the point. You do your shopping and so on in nearby villages. Mal Pais is where you stay to get away from it all. And surf.



One of the best ways to enjoy Mal Pais and come and go as you please is to rent a villa. You can find plenty of villas online, usually named Casa this or that or Hacienda this or that and the descriptions are always heavenly, as are the pictures. Casa Blanca, for example, which sleeps ten (three bedrooms, hmm, that must mean a bit of cosiness is involved), breathtaking views, a 20 meter infinity lap pool and a roof terrace. All yours for between $2,450 USD to $7000 USD per week. Even places described as “rustic” run from about $200 USD per night. The purposefully named Casa De Amor is geared towards honeymooners, with complete privacy, ocean views, the lot.



One beachfront rental, Punta Coco, looks like a classic Costa Rican holiday beach home, with multiple cabins with AC (5 bedrooms), and an outdoor kitchen/dining area, perfect for watching the Howler moneys. Prices range from $400 USD to $700 USD per night, but split that among, say 6-12 surfers and it`s not so bad a deal at all.



While there are probably good Costa Rican travel deals and package tours, it`s more adventurous and less scheduled if you just rent a villa and do your own thing. A good place to start searching for villas is on the internet, then when you find one you like the look of, check out the terms and conditions, the prices, the ease of getting there and of course the availability. If all goes well, a deposit is usually required and the balance must arrive a few weeks before you do. After that, it`s surf`s up.

Casa San Isidro has 2 floors. The upper floor has four bedrooms. The master bedroom is spacious with a private deck overlooking the pool. The Master bedroom also has a private bath with Jacuzzi tub. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a lovely dining area. The lower floor has a large recreation relaxation area which also could be used for an extra bedroom. This home could easily sleep 8 to 10 people.

The lower floor opens up to a wonderful patio, lighted pool and Jacuzzi. You will be spending most your time relaxing by the pool, enjoying the grill, and swim up bar.

During your stay you will have peace of mind as the house comes with a full time caretaker and the house is accessed through an electric security gate. A Washer and Dryer are also available.

Relax by the swim up bar at the pool and enjoy this 2 1\2 acres which is beautifully landscaped and home to howler monkeys and tropical birds.

Listen for the monkeys in the near distance and watch the parrots from the hanging balcony beds as they return to their nests each afternoon. Or simply relax in the hammocks and take in the tranquility of the ocean

Casa de Amor is the most romantic rental house in the Malpais/Santa Teresa area. It’s completely private, with no other homes with 500 meters or more. Ideal for honeymooners, or couples wishing to relive theirs. If you’re going on vacation and thinking about making a marriage proposal, then this is the place to do it! It has a second double bed, so it works well for small families too.

Look at that View!

This rental house is blessed with the most gorgeous views in Malpais. I’ve seen the view from Mel Gibson’s land and this one beats it. It has a perfect bird’s eye view of both the famous Sunset Reef surf break, Mar Azul. This view is incredible from every part of the house, even the bathroom. If you’re coming to Costa Rica to relax, you’ve found the right rental villa, because this view will nearly put you in a trance. It’s hard to impress this writer with views around here, because I own Anamaya Resort, and as owner of Tropisphere real estate too, I’ve seen just about every view in the area. Believe me, this view is in the top three in the area.

Infinity Pool

Casa de Amor has a brand new private infinity pool just for you! The views from the pool are really just to die for. You will find yourself staring for hours at the sea and jungle below. Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen because the pool gets full sun all day.

House Design

The house is an open design, with a large kitchen on one side and the bedroom on the other, and no door in between. Nearly all the walls are just glass, creating a great feeling of light and space. It’s an ideal design for the tropics, and works well here in this ultra-private setting.

The bathroom is very unique, with the shower outside in the open air, and a large round window facing the ocean view. Again, this type of bathroom is ideal for the tropics, and architects and builders who are working in Costa Rica should take note of the design.

Nearby Malpais Beaches and Amenities:

This house is located near famous Mary’s Restaurant, which is one of the best in the area. It’s also close to Malpais’s “Secret Beach”, which is possibly the most idyllic and perfect white sand beach in the peninsula. It will fulfill all your tropical beach fantasies unless you’re a surfer, since this is a better beach for swimming and also it’s the best snorkelling spot in Malpais.

For malpais surfing, Casa de Amor is located near to the best surf break in the peninsula… Sunset Reef. It’s also close to Mar Azul, another great break. If you want a beach break, the beaches of Santa Teresa are only about 5-6 minutes drive, along with all of Santa Teresa’s fabulous restaurants and the chocolate eclairs at the new Belgian bakery (highly recommended.)

A trip back in time to the golden days of the Santa Teresa/Malpais area. This is one of the oldest beachfront houses in the area, built by a successful lawyer from San Jose as his family’s private remote hideaway from the city, and only just now opened up for the public to rent after a major remodel that modernized it and added a swimming pool.

The ultimate “pura vida” experience, and the most affordable large beachfront villas in the area. With three cabinas, consisting of five rooms and capacity to sleep 12, a few families can stay here together for less than the price of a hotel. With a large chill/dining area, this rental is one of the best in the area. The house sits right on the point, with a border of coconut palm trees, hence it’s name “Punta Coco.” Directly in front, beyond a border of sand, are rocks, which create a very beautiful scene as the waves break upon them. You can’t swim directly in front, so the tourists don’t hang out right in front of the house, giving you excellent privacy. But the swimming beaches are very close… just a 1-2 minute walk, which we think makes this the absolutely ideal beachfront location.

The property consists of four acres of natural tropical forest and has approximately 150 feet of beachfront. Santa Teresa in Costa Rica is very well known for it’s world class surfing, which is a one minute walk from this tropical paradise. Enjoy summer days under a deep blue sky, relax and rest on a hammock, embedded in an exuberant vegetation, surrounded by exotic tropical birds, howler monkeys, or squirrels inviting you for a stroll through the tropical forest, or walk by the white sanded, warm, Pacific shoreline.

The Mar Azul Master Bedroom comes complete with a private balcony overlooking the bay and a Hazel Italian Tiled bathroom complete with indoor shower (Rain Shower – you will never forget this experience with choice of Waterfall, Rain or Massage) and also an outdoor shower with private balcony overlooking the ocean (and Mel Gibson’s Malpais Home). You will luxuriate in this softly lit bathroom with two sinks and music in the ceiling. There are built-in wardrobes and private office area in the entry hall. The entrance to this half of the floor is hidden behind a sandblasted glass entrance. There is a 42” Plasma Television in this air-conditioned environment with Lutron Lighting to create any ambiance. All lights in the house are also controlled from this room for total comfort!

The Jungle View Guest Room also has its own balcony, air-conditioning and has the most stunning view of Cabo Blanca National Park just outside the sliding glass doors. There is built-in closet wall with vanity desk.

The Sea View Guest Room has the most stunning view of all Malpais/Santa Teresa overlooking the lap pool with a fantastic vista of the sunset. This room also has AC.

You will never forget a night in these rooms. The joy of being on the hill is that there is a constant cool breeze from the ocean, much lower humidity, total security and tranquillity – and complete privacy.

All bedrooms now have flat panel TVs, with WIFI internet access throughout the house.

Kitchen and Dining:

The Kitchen is fully equipped with all the latest appliances – everything you’ll need to spend days and evenings enjoying wonderful meals. Just fold back the Italian glass windows and enjoy your meal while watching the sun set over Santa Teresa. If you need, please ask us about hiring a private chef to prepare your culinary delights.

There is a local grocery store nearby and we have the finest restaurants in Malpais located at the bottom of the hill: Mary’s and Soda Piedras.

In the TV Lounge, there is an electric rollup 8-foot TV Screen with Digital Projector and 5.1 Speakers making this room a truly wonderful Home Cinema. The sofa pulls out to make another double bed in case you need it.

SKY TV is available in the media room and all the bedrooms, and there’s a Mac Computer as well. Hi Speed WIFI is available in all areas.

The house comes with caretaker and cleaning staff so that you won’t have to worry yourselves or lift a finger. Just enjoy, relax and make yourself at home.
