Punta Barragona is one of the most beautiful spots in Malpais and yet hardly anyone ever goes there because it’s difficult to find. The point is a huge rock, and there are surf spots on both sides of it (Mar Azul and Bahia Barragona). In front of this giant rock is an amazing set of tidepools. Check out photos of them here: Costa Rica tidepools.

Los Suecos Beach, Malpais
November 28, 2011
Los Suecos means, “The Swedes” because of the Swedish family that lived down by this beach years ago. Los Suecos, also know as “the secret beach” is one of the truly hidden gems of the Malpais / Santa Teresa area, and isn’t visited by many tourists.
People who have lived in the area for years come to this beach because of it’s beautiful white sand, it’s extremely photogenic beauty, the best snorkeling on the southern Nicoya peninsula, and its amazing tidepools. It’s also located next to the epic Sunset Reef surf spot.
To find it, drive past the Fisherman’s beach at the very southern end of Malpais and just keep going off to the left. You’ll know you’ve found it when you see a gate. This is Cabo Blanco National Park, but this entrance to the park isn’t open to the public.
Park near the gate and find a trail winding down to the small beach. It’s a very safe place to swim. A rock reef protects the beach so no large waves make it inside.
On a good day, the water can be very clear here. I’ve seen octopus, several species of eels, a turtle, a gigantic ray, lobsters, giant hermit crabs, and lots of fish species. The proximity to the national park, where there’s (theoretically) no fishing means that there’s more sea life here… at least until the spearfisherman kill them.
A picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll leave you with a set of photos taken from various trips to Los Suecos:

Vamos Rental Car
January 16, 2011

We are now working with Vamos Rental Car, which we’ve found to be the best in Costa Rica.
Most of the familiar name brand car company franchises are all owned by the same people, so the prices tend to be high, especially in the dry season.
Vamos is independently owned, has over 100 cars, mostly 4x4s, and is 30% cheaper. In addition, the don’t charge extra for extra drivers, a child seat, a cooler, etc.
The main disadvantage of Vamos is that they only have offices in San Jose and Liberia, so if something goes wrong with your car, they need to send a mechanic with a new car to you which takes nearly a minimum of 5 hours and probably more. But, if you’re willing to take the risk, Vamos is the way to go. They keep their cars in great shape.
Contact us at info@malpaisbeach.com if you’d like us to book you a 4×4 rental car with Vamos.

Suck Rock – Malpais Surfing
January 10, 2011
January 10, 2011
One of the most legendary surf breaks in the Malpais/Santa Teresa region is known as “Suck Rock” or sometimes “Rocamar” which is the small restaurant on the beach near the break.
This right-hand point break can be good when the swells are large, and it’s known to get hollow at times. This is Malpais surfing at its best. The break can work at all tides, but it’s best at low tide, and during this time, your friends and family can walk out on the rocky point to watch you surf.
Next to Suck Rock, to the south is one of the most consistent beach breaks, on the gorgeous white sand beach known as “La Lora”. The surf competitions are sometimes held here, right in front of the luxury villa rental “The Sea Ranch”.

The Malpais area has now become known mainly for its amazing surfing in Santa Teresa and gorgeous beaches, but there’s much more than white sand here. The convoluted coastal topography has beaches of different colors of sand… some of rock and some of white shell. Many are lined with palm trees, mangroves, or almond trees. There are points with epic giant boulder piles, or huge jungle-covered cliffs towering above the waves.

Info about the Red Tide in Montezuma-Malpais
September 2, 2010

Sept 10, 2010
The following information is based on research done by Jeremy from the Montezuma Surf School:
There are many kinds of red tide, most of which are harmless.
Some do have harmful effects which usually affect sea life more than humans
– There is no evidence yet that this red tide is at all harmful to humans
– Swimming, if harmful at all, is not as dangerous as eating infected sea life
– The most harmful effects on humans are due to eating infected shellfish and possibly (but less likely) fish in certain kinds of red tide
– Consumption may cause sickness, paralysis or even death!
– Avoid eating shellfish or fish during this time
If this is a harmful red tide, a small percentage of people may be mildly affected by simply being near or swimming or surfing in the ocean. The only known side effects are mild and include:
– Eye irritation
– Runny nose
– Coughing
– Skin irritation
Usually those prone to plant allergies to begin with may be affected. If you notice any symptoms, simply getting away from the beach or entering an air conditioned room should cause the symptoms to disappear. Asthmatics however may experience:
– Significant respiratory problems
– Decreased lung capacity
If you are asthmatic, we recommend NOT swimming or surfing
Although some locals spread this rumor, there is no evidence that red tide can cause an ear infection (although just swimming in the ocean can often cause an ear infection under any circumstance).
Our friend, nurse and Montezuma resident, Amanda Weir, recommends putting hydrogen peroxide in your ears after getting out of the ocean to avoid ear infections whether or not in the presence of a red tide.
As we are confident that the effects of surfing in a red tide (if seen at all) are indeed mild if any at all, our Surfing courses will continue as planned. We will scour the beaches for the best surfing location each day with the least amount of red tide possible. We hope that it will disappear shortly in any event, as it is known to only last a week or two.

Donations urgently needed for the new police station construction
May 13, 2010
Ok ok……everyone ready for a laugh? the two sinks, which were donated, for the police station bathrooms have been stolen. why? because we ran out of money before we could completely secure the place. so…..now that everyone is smiling…..and YES we are having the fundraiser on the 22 of may…..but honestly, we need help NOW in order to secure this building so we don’t lose anything else. we have been focusing on trying to at least finish one room and one bathroom, so that we do not have to rent a house anymore, however, without making the whole house secure, there is always a risk of theft. (as we all know!!)
so, to secure the place we need (1) verhas on all the windows, (2) a front door plus good door handle, and (3) to close up the back wall with block.
i have one ferreteria who has agreed to extend us credit to buy the block (a total of 215.000 with varilla and cemento), but we do not have such luxury for the steel need to do the verhas. the verhas constructed and installed run around 300.000 colones, unless someone knows or is themselves a welder and can help us.
please, we have come soooo soooo far……but we need a bit more immediate help to protect the work that we’ve done thus far. ANYTHING will be helpful…..10.000, 100.000 or (yes i am dreaming here…) 1.000.000 colones. ANYTHING. please.
the Banco Nacional account is in the name of the Asociacion Probienestar de Mal Pais, Sta. Teresa y Manzanillo, and the account number is 200-01-191-000327-1.
for those of you unaware, the police station is located on the road on the south end of the football field in Santa Teresa.
thank you in advance for any and all help!!!

Casa de Amor
May 6, 2010
Casa de Amor is the most romantic rental house in the Malpais/Santa Teresa area. It’s completely private, with no other homes with 500 meters or more. Ideal for honeymooners, or couples wishing to relive theirs. If you’re going on vacation and thinking about making a marriage proposal, then this is the place to do it! It has a second double bed, so it works well for small families too.
Look at that View!
This rental house is blessed with the most gorgeous views in Malpais. I’ve seen the view from Mel Gibson’s land and this one beats it. It has a perfect bird’s eye view of both the famous Sunset Reef surf break, Mar Azul. This view is incredible from every part of the house, even the bathroom. If you’re coming to Costa Rica to relax, you’ve found the right rental villa, because this view will nearly put you in a trance. It’s hard to impress this writer with views around here, because I own Anamaya Resort, and as owner of Tropisphere real estate too, I’ve seen just about every view in the area. Believe me, this view is in the top three in the area.
Infinity Pool
Casa de Amor has a brand new private infinity pool just for you! The views from the pool are really just to die for. You will find yourself staring for hours at the sea and jungle below. Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen because the pool gets full sun all day.
House Design
The house is an open design, with a large kitchen on one side and the bedroom on the other, and no door in between. Nearly all the walls are just glass, creating a great feeling of light and space. It’s an ideal design for the tropics, and works well here in this ultra-private setting.
The bathroom is very unique, with the shower outside in the open air, and a large round window facing the ocean view. Again, this type of bathroom is ideal for the tropics, and architects and builders who are working in Costa Rica should take note of the design.
Nearby Malpais Beaches and Amenities:
This house is located near famous Mary’s Restaurant, which is one of the best in the area. It’s also close to Malpais’s “Secret Beach”, which is possibly the most idyllic and perfect white sand beach in the peninsula. It will fulfill all your tropical beach fantasies unless you’re a surfer, since this is a better beach for swimming and also it’s the best snorkelling spot in Malpais.
For malpais surfing, Casa de Amor is located near to the best surf break in the peninsula… Sunset Reef. It’s also close to Mar Azul, another great break. If you want a beach break, the beaches of Santa Teresa are only about 5-6 minutes drive, along with all of Santa Teresa’s fabulous restaurants and the chocolate eclairs at the new Belgian bakery (highly recommended.)
Other Details:
* High Speed Wireless Internet: We have high speed wireless set up, and you’ll just need the password to get connected.
* Gas Barbecue Grill: High end American Style gas grill is operational… perfect for grilling the fish you catch while in Malpais. Or buy fresh fish from the fisherman, straight off the boats in Malpais.
* Kitchen: The house has a large, full kitchen with four-burner stove, a large stainless steel refrigerator with built-in ice maker, and all the pots and pans you need.
* TV: Yes, it even has cable TV for those who don’t want to escape from the tube even in Costa Rica… with hundreds of international channels. It also has many music channels and can be used that way too.

Punta Coco
May 6, 2010
A trip back in time to the golden days of the Santa Teresa/Malpais area. This is one of the oldest beachfront houses in the area, built by a successful lawyer from San Jose as his family’s private remote hideaway from the city, and only just now opened up for the public to rent after a major remodel that modernized it and added a swimming pool.
The ultimate “pura vida” experience, and the most affordable large beachfront villas in the area. With three cabinas, consisting of five rooms and capacity to sleep 12, a few families can stay here together for less than the price of a hotel. With a large chill/dining area, this rental is one of the best in the area. The house sits right on the point, with a border of coconut palm trees, hence it’s name “Punta Coco.” Directly in front, beyond a border of sand, are rocks, which create a very beautiful scene as the waves break upon them. You can’t swim directly in front, so the tourists don’t hang out right in front of the house, giving you excellent privacy. But the swimming beaches are very close… just a 1-2 minute walk, which we think makes this the absolutely ideal beachfront location.
The property consists of four acres of natural tropical forest and has approximately 150 feet of beachfront. Santa Teresa in Costa Rica is very well known for it’s world class surfing, which is a one minute walk from this tropical paradise. Enjoy summer days under a deep blue sky, relax and rest on a hammock, embedded in an exuberant vegetation, surrounded by exotic tropical birds, howler monkeys, or squirrels inviting you for a stroll through the tropical forest, or walk by the white sanded, warm, Pacific shoreline.
Sunsets in Punta Coco are extraordinarily beautiful, with numerous seagulls and pelicans flying by. The sound of breaking waves lulls one to sleep on clear starry nights or of intense darkness.
Surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, horse back riding, hiking at Cabo Blanco National Park, and saltwater sports fishing are among the many activities that can be enjoyed during your stay.
